step 6. combine units into a composition

Before beginning your composition, pause and reflect on your experiments. What did you discover through trial and error? Did you play it safe? How much were you able to control the outcome? How much did you want to control the outcome? Did you take any risks? How did it feel being lost? Do the Evaluation Exercise on this page.

As you consider your composition, know that you don’t have to use all of the units. You can mix units from each round into a single quilt composition, or you may choose to keep the units separated by round and make a series of compositions. You can choose the most successful units from your experiments and duplicate the results to create more for your composition, while discarding the less successful units. You can set the units in a grid or you can offset them. You can cut them into smaller sections. You can offset them with irregular sashing. Refer to the Patchwork Puzzle technique (this page) and the Design Consideration: The Modern Permeable Border (this page) for additional guidance with composition.
